Voice mode
Typing is fast, but sometimes speaking is faster. Voice mode lets you give CoDirector your editing instructions out loud, in a natural conversational tone, without switching focus to the keyboard. It's particularly useful when you're reviewing footage, need to describe a nuanced edit, or simply want to keep your hands free while thinking through a decision.
Voice mode uses the same editing capabilities as text-based Edit mode — it's a different input method, not a different set of features.
Starting a voice session
- Open the CoDirector panel in the right sidebar of the video editor.
- Click the microphone icon at the bottom of the input area.
- If your browser hasn't been granted microphone access yet, a permission prompt will appear — click Allow.
Voice mode launches and the panel switches to the voice interface.
The animated orb
Once a voice session is active, an animated orb appears at the center of the CoDirector panel. The orb's behavior changes to reflect CoDirector's current state:
- Connecting — the session is being established
- Listening — CoDirector is actively hearing you speak
- Thinking — it's processing your instruction
- Speaking — it's delivering a response
A small colored indicator dot in the corner of the orb also reflects the state: blue for listening, yellow for thinking, green for speaking, and orange while connecting.
Live transcription
As CoDirector listens and responds, a live transcription appears below the orb. The last few lines of the conversation are shown in real time, scrolling automatically as the exchange continues. This lets you confirm that CoDirector heard you correctly before it acts on the instruction.
Muting and unmuting
Click the mute button at any time to silence your microphone without ending the session. The button turns red when you're muted. Click it again to unmute and continue speaking. This is useful if you need to pause mid-thought, take a call, or speak to someone nearby without ending the voice session.
Ending a voice session
Click the close (X) button in the voice interface to end the session and return to the standard text input view. After the session ends, your conversation is synced back into the CoDirector panel so you can review what was said and what edits were applied.
When to use voice mode
You're in a flow and don't want to stop. Staying in the footage review mindset is easier when you can just say what you want rather than typing it.
The edit is hard to describe concisely. Speaking out loud often makes it easier to explain something complex or contextual — "cut that awkward pause after I say 'so basically'" is natural to say but harder to type quickly.
You want to move fast. Voice instructions can be faster than typing for longer or multi-part instructions.
Tip: Speak naturally. You don't need special commands or precise phrasing. Describe the edit the way you'd explain it to a human editor — CoDirector understands context and intent, not just keywords.
